NoDa Brewing

NoDa Brewing is a creative, lively brewery born in the same neighborhood that bears its name. But they had started out with a systemic, monotonous way of presenting their varietals that wasn't just aesthetically uninspiring—it was hurting sales. All the beers looked the same, they were hard to read on a tap handle, and they didn't represent the real attitude of NoDa—arguably Charlotte’s quirkiest, avant garde arts-iest neighborhood. What started with Hop Drop N Roll and Jam Session redesigns soon ballooned into all the work you see below. It even included a website that helped grow accounts, and used several insights to create solid UX for future customers. (For example, at this early stage of craft beer mania, we found many people picked the kinds of beer they wanted based on the beer color alone, so we featured our whole lineup in photos. Then when visitors picked one they thought they might like, we suggested similar ones.) We also had a beer finder, which was an industry first at the time and actually helped people buy the beer. And there’s a whole story about the Monstro label that I love to tell. NoDa quickly became one of the fastest growing breweries in the nation. In the end, it’s because they make great beer, and worked really hard to promote it. But the packaging and branding certainly helped them take off. NoDa Brewing is now one of the largest breweries in the state and recognized across the country by craft beer aficionados.

Monstro is a double imperial stout with a 72 SRM, meaning it is as opaque as possible. Not only did we develop a label as black and ominous as the beer itself, we leaned into its identity. Named after the sperm whale in Pinocchio, this label also features the scars on its snout sperm whales typically get from battling giant squid in the depths of the sea.

Website

This website was beautiful, but really hard working. We took all their strengths and everything we knew about craft beer lovers and put it into the UX, design and copy of this site. At its beginning craft beer was new to most, and we found that newbies often chose beer they thought they would like based on color, so we showed all varietals and what color they were. On individual pages, we noted Beer Advocate and Rate Beer scores, and we recommended other beers to try if they liked that particular one.had ways for restaurants to reach out to carry our beer, and ways for Fns to tell us where we might want to send our sales teams to get NoDa on tap. We even developed an industry-first Beer Finder that helped thirsty folks find our most delicious beers, right down to the specific terminals in the airport.
